Exhibition 'Between Sea and Land'

Between Sea and Land brings together the results of a study on the territory of Costa da Caparica prepared in 2021 by young architects from ISCTE. This project focuses on a unique landscape that needs to be rehabilitated, constituting a critical look at the territory, bringing together multiple ideas and opportunities for intervention, and seeking answers to its weaknesses, also offering a strategy for the consolidation and protection of the natural and built environment.

80 years of Landscape Architecture

The 80 Years of Landscape Architecture Conference aims to celebrate eight decades of Landscape Architecture Education in Portugal and to disseminate the teaching and professional practice of Landscape Architecture as one of the first professions to apply the principles of Ecology to its professional practice.

The celebrations have as their central and congregating event the LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE JOURNEYS 80 YEARS OF TEACHING AT ISA with the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year.

The program of the Commemorations includes the CONFERENCE, the itinerant EXHIBITION by the Faculties that teach Landscape Architecture, the INAUGURATION OF AN AVENUE in Tapada da Ajuda in honor of the founder of Landscape Architecture in Portugal, Professor Francisco Caldeira Cabral, culminating with the SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATION celebrating the 80 Years and the legacy.

Management of Archaeological Sites in Urban Areas

The International Meeting on the Management of Archaeological Sites in Urban Environments, organized by the Municipality of Almada in partnership with the University of Lisbon, the Serra Henriques Foundation and ICOMOS, aims to welcome experiences of ongoing enhancement projects, promoting a debate on the challenges of valuing and opening to the public archaeological sites integrated in an urban context. 


2018/2019 YOUNG EUROPEAN SCIENTIST MEETING

The Serra Henriques Foundation, the city of Oporto and the Portuguese Order of Physicians are the institutional partners of this international event, which features the participation of four hundred young investigators within the biomedical sphere, from twenty-five different countries.

The congress takes place in the University of Porto between the 13th and the 16th of September and it will gather world-class scientists who will present major discoveries in five different areas: Internal Medicine, Neurosciences, Oncology & Molecular Biology, Physiology & Immunology, and Surgery.

Alongside the missions of governments and universities, the Serra Henriques Foundation intends to be an institution that is agile in the creation of network synergies and to promote public policies within the spheres of the qualility of life of both people and the environment.

Through the collaboration with the Directorate-General for Health, Faculties of Medicine and Hospital Centers, the Foundation supports the organization of conferences, congresses, research centers and the dissemination of good practices in Public Health


Medical Students' Congress | UBI

Within the framework of academic cooperation with Portuguese universities, the Serra Henriques Foundation is an institutional partner and supports the organization of the MedUBI congress, which welcomes 900 medical students.

The University of Beira Interior (UBI) was founded in 1986 and encompasses a set of Faculties with 7200 students, placing Covilhã and the region in a prominent position in terms of scientific and artistic knowledge. This is due not only to the teaching provided, but also to the research carried out in the various departments and research units.


Architecture, Urbanism and Landscape Meetings

This national conference, organized by the Order of Architects and the Serra Henriques Foundation, promotes a reflection on the teaching of architecture in Portugal in the context of the portrait that the Archiprix Prize offers of the last 5 years distinguishing the best projects from all Portuguese universities.

It is an opportunity to bring together members of the various compositions of the jury, teachers and experts for a debate around topics that concern all those who share the mission and commitment to affirm national education and the excellence of young talents in Portuguese Architecture.

This session follows the seminar on Spatial Planning that will also take place at the Monastery of Santa Clara on the 13th of October.

The strategic participation of the partner institutions will be an encouraging challenge for the broad debate on the bridges of collaboration between academia and entities that study and value our territory, cities and cultural heritage.


Cross Architectures

Education, Territory and Cultural Heritage under debate

The Foz Palace was the stage for this national meeting organized by the Serra Henriques Foundation with the support of the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and the Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage.Committed to promoting Cultural Heritage, Sustainable Urbanism and Spatial Planning, the Serra Henriques Foundation, in collaboration with academia and guardianships, It has been organising strategic debates with the aim of ensuring the quality of cities and the landscape. In this context, and following three conferences held in Sintra, Porto and Coimbra, in partnership with the Order of Architects and the Directorate-General for the Territory, the Foundation promoted this meeting of experts and "thinkers of the territory" to discuss these national challenges and designs.


Architecture and Spatial Planning outside the urban perimeters

The Serra Henriques Foundation is an institutional partner of the Portuguese Architects Association (OA) in the organization of two strategic debates on the 13th and 14th of October 2017. The first is dedicated to Architecture and Spatial Planning outside the urban perimeters. On the second day, and also at the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Velha, the Architecture, Urbanism and Landscape Meetings take place.

The proposal to amend the National Programme for Spatial Planning Policy (PNPOT) is being prepared, in which OA participates, under the coordination of the Directorate-General for Territory (DGT), which motivates the holding of seminars, preferably through collaboration between the various entities of the Consultative Commission.

In this sense, OA proposes to organize 3 sessions of debates, the first in Coimbra on the 13th of October, in partnership with the Association of Portuguese Urban Planners (AUP), under the theme: Architecture and Spatial Planning outside the Urban Perimeters.

More than addressing the strategic diagnosis of the problems, it is intended to discuss how to simplify the process of operationalizing the solutions, to improve the effectiveness of the territorial management measures. It is expected that in 2018 a second session will take place in Porto on the implementation of the National Policy on Architecture and Landscape, in partnership with the Portuguese Association of Landscape Architects (APAP), and the third in Lisbon, also with the support of DGT, within the scope of the European Year of Heritage.


AEBR Conference - Task Force Culture

As an operational partner of the Association of European Border Regions (AEBR), the Serra Henriques Foundation participated in the planning of the annual conference of this organization representing a hundred European regional governments. The event took place in the city of Mons in Belgium, where the Foundation presented projects of potential transnational cooperation in the cultural fields.

The conference was attended by dozens of entities from several Member States and was chaired by Karl-Heinz Lambertz, leader of the AEBR and current President of the Committee of the Regions of the European Union.


European Architecture Policy Conference

The biannual conference on the European architecture policies of the Member States was organised in Bucharest on 12 June by the Romanian Presidency of the European Union with the theme "Future Shapers".

At this meeting, the main actions carried out by the partners in the implementation of this public policy (Casa da Arquitectura, Serra Henriques Foundation, Gulbenkian Foundation, Serralves Foundation, Lisbon Architecture Triennale, MAAT) were presented.

Since 2011, the Serra Henriques Foundation has participated in the European Forum on Architecture Policies (EFAP) dedicated to the debate and promotion of architecture, urbanism and territorial development policies, combining public governance, culture and education.

The forum originated in an international conference in 1997, under the Dutch presidency of the European Union, which brought together representatives of European governments, cultural institutions and professional associations to share experiences and perspectives on Architecture Policies in the EU. Since then, biannual meetings have been held under the organisation of the EU Member State.

Among several objectives, these meetings seek to disseminate and share knowledge and good practices in the field of urban, cultural, spatial planning and resilience policies.

Currently, and within the framework of the implementation of the National Policy on Architecture and Landscape, the Serra Henriques Foundation collaborates with the monitoring committee of this public policy, to ensure the Portuguese participation in this European Forum.


Conference of the National Policy of Architecture and Landscape

Conference held at the Northern Regional Coordination and Development Commission and organized by the Order of Architects, the Portuguese Association of Landscape Architects and the Serra Henriques Foundation, with the collaboration of the Directorate-General for Territory and the Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage.

Portugal's public policy on architecture and landscape was approved by the Council of Ministers on June 4, 2015. From the outset, the Serra Henriques Foundation accepted the challenge of the Monitoring Committee to integrate the group of partners for the implementation of this essential tool for the development of the territory and the enhancement of cultural heritage.


INTBAU World Congress 2018

The Serra Henriques Foundation participated in the strategic debate that took place after the congress of INTBAU - International Network for Traditional Architecture and Urbanism - created and sponsored by King Charles III of England.

INTBAU is the partner of the Serra Henriques Foundation in the Rafael Manzano Prize for New Traditional Architecture and in initiatives to enhance territories and safeguard cultural heritage.

The INTBAU network was created in 2001 under the umbrella of the Prince Foundation and today has delegations in 32 countries with a total of 6000 members. This last congress took place in London at the Royal Society of Arts and brought together delegates from all over the world to discuss the strategic issues of urbanism, architecture and sustainable construction.

The main theme of the congress was the resurgence of the use of local materials and traditional forms of construction.


 Like Culture Conference in Sarajevo

Official visit to Sarajevo as part of the international meeting of European Cities and Regions for Culture - an entity represented in Portugal by the Serra Henriques Foundation.

On 4 February, the first LikeCulture meeting of 2016 was held at the United Nations building in Sarajevo under the auspices of UNESCO and the French Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The event was dominated by the importance of European cultural identity and sustainable development in the country's integration process into the European Union, whose application for membership was made official on March 15, 2016.

For this to happen properly, a number of changes will be needed, and in recent months great impetus has been given by the European institutions, but many constraints require extensive reforms and a huge involvement of the Member States, the institutions and civil society. In this field, the Foundation had the opportunity to present its line of action and, above all, its willingness to collaborate in academic projects aimed at a better knowledge of cultural realities and the sharing of good practices in social and urban development.

The visit to Sarajevo ended with a protocol session at the official residence of Her Excellency the Ambassador of France, with whom the Foundation has established a strong dialogue of cooperation in these areas.


INTBAU International Conference 2017

International Network of Traditional Construction, Architecture and Urbanism

As a Portuguese partner of the INTTAU network, the Serra Henriques Foundation was represented at this international meeting in Milan to highlight the implementation in Portugal of the Traditional Architecture Award and other initiatives related to the enhancement of local heritage and identities.

This conference is organised every year in one of the countries of the global network to stimulate wider participation. The 2017 event is held on the 5th and 6th of July in Italy and is dedicated to intervention methodologies in historic urban landscapes, traditional construction and urban planning.

INTBAU is a charitable educational organisation working under the High Patronage of its founder, His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, to promote traditional architecture and urbanism.

The global network includes locations in 27 countries: Australia, Afghanistan, Albania, Canada, Cuba, Cyprus, Scandinavia, Egypt, Estonia, Germany, Italy, India, Iran, Ireland, Montenegro, Nigeria, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, the United States of America, and the United States.


National Territory and Economy under debate

In collaboration with the Urban Planners of Portugal (AUP), the municipalities of Porto and Sintra and the Institute of Management and Public Administration, the Serra Henriques Foundation held two seminars dedicated to Territorial Plans and the Ibero-American Congress of Urbanism. Following these events, the Carta de Sintra and the book Sociedade e Território (Society and Territory) were published.

The topicality of the issue and the dimension of this problem call for the committed participation of Municipalities, the State, financial institutions, construction or real estate development companies and urban planners, in the search for solutions. Only interdisciplinary study and reflection will contribute to the advancement of theoretical and practical knowledge of urbanism, which is indispensable for creating a harmonious, financially secure and economically sustainable socio-territorial relationship.


European Housing Congress

Housing and the Welfare State in times of change, Urban Regeneration Policies and Territorial Development

Under the protocol signed with the Portuguese Committee for the Coordination of Public Housing, the Serra Henriques Foundation was delighted to support the holding of the European Housing Congress in Lisbon, in partnership with the Institute for Housing and Urban Rehabilitation and the Lisbon City Council.

The congress, which took place at ISCTE - University Institute of Lisbon, involved dozens of European institutions and universities invited by the European Federation of Public Housing (Housing Europe), along with six hundred participants and researchers from all over the world.

The holding of the event in Portugal deserved the High Patronage of His Excellencies the President of the Republic and President of the Assembly of the Republic.


International Conference Like Culture

Association of European Cities and Regions for Culture - LIKE Culture -

The Serra Henriques Foundation, the institutional representative of this organization in Portugal, regularly participates in the organization of conferences and networking meetings that take place throughout the year and in different cities of the European Union.

The Association of European Cities and Regions for Culture was established in 1994 by the European Commission and Ministers of Culture and Foreign Affairs and is currently made up of 112 members from 25 countries.


European Meeting of Mayors, Lisbon 2017

In May 2017 the Serra Henriques Foundation organized, together with the municipalities of Lisbon and Almada, the meeting of European Cities and Regions for Culture (LIKE Culture) in the Lisbon region with the support of the European Committee of the Regions and the Government of Portugal. This meeting, dedicated to cooperation and the paths to a united Europe, was attended by 60 representatives of municipalities, Regional Coordination and Development Commissions, cultural entities and European institutions.

The two member municipalities of the LIKE Culture network presented their strategic lines of cultural policy and local projects that stand out for their transnational collaboration.

The management of the European network has framed these initiatives in the advantages of participating in the network, such as the identification of partners or EU funding.

During the sessions, delegates raised local questions and challenges in the fields of territorial collaboration and cultural policies, with direct answers from the Portuguese Minister of Culture, Luís Filipe de Castro Mendes, and the new President of the European Committee of the Regions, Karl-Heinz Lambertz.


Biomedical Congress 2018

The Serra Henriques Foundation is an institutional partner of the Biomedical Congress, which brings together students of Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Aquatic Sciences, Biochemistry and Bioengineering.

For 4 days, emerging themes in the scientific community are addressed, both transversal and specific to each of the five courses. It has a diverse and innovative program, including workshops, lectures, conferences and round tables.

The congress will take place between the 15th and 18th of March 2018 at the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences of the University of Porto.


Lisbon Plan

Over the course of a month, the Gaivotas Cultural Centre of the Lisbon City Council hosted a series of colloquiums with the support of the Serra Henriques Foundation.

Luís Santiago Baptista, Gonçalo M. Tavares, Mário Caeiro and Catarina Pombo Nabais were the guest curators to discuss the relationship between contemporary art and public space, architecture and urbanism, communication systems, different urban communities, collaborative policies and the development of cities.

The Lisbon Plan aims to create synergies and mechanisms to bring the community closer together and strengthen cultural identity, using contemporary artistic production and architecture as a means of communication, broad debate and civic construction. It is a broad programme of contemporary art that proposes to think about cultural production in its relationship with the city, in a dialogue with the social, historical and architectural factors that constitute it.


European Forum for Architecture Policies
(Tallinn, Estonia)

The Serra Henriques Foundation participated in the last meeting of the European Forum on Architecture Policies dedicated to the debate and promotion of architecture, urbanism and territorial development policies, combining public governance, culture and education.

Among several objectives, this Forum aims to disseminate and share knowledge and good practices in the field of urban policies and spatial planning.

The international meeting took place on 21 and 22 September 2017 in Tallinn, as part of the Estonian Presidency of the European Union.


Docomomo International Conference

The Serra Henriques Foundation, as an Institutional Partner of Docomomo International, announces the holding of the 14th international conference Docomomo - International Committee for the Documentation and Conservation of Buildings, Sites and Public Spaces.

The conference will take place at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation between 6 and 9 September, under the theme "Adaptive Re-use. The Modern Movement Towards the Future", and includes a programme of round tables, workshops and visits to buildings and urban structures in the centre and north of the country.

The theme focuses on the conservation and reuse of buildings, promoting and disseminating the appropriate techniques and methods of conservation to explore and develop new ideas for "a sustainable built environment in the future, based on the experiences of the past".

The architects Álvaro Siza Vieira, Rem Koolhaas, Joan Busquets, Juhani Pallaasma, Winfried Brenne, João Gomes da Silva, João Luís Carrilho da Graça are on the list of speakers.


European Congress of Young Scientists 2017

The Serra Henriques Foundation, the Porto City Council and the Portuguese Medical Association are the institutional partners of the European Congress of Young Scientists, which has the participation of four hundred young researchers from the biomedical areas and from 25 nationalities.

The main objective is to bring together world-class scientists in Porto who will present great discoveries in different areas: Internal Medicine, Surgery, Oncology, Molecular Biology, Physiology, Neurosciences and Immunology.

The congress will take place at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto between the 14th and 17th of September under the High Patronage of the President of the Portuguese Republic and the European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation.


ONU-Habitat III

The United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (UN-HABITAT III) takes place on a 20-year cycle and will take place in Ecuador in 2017.

The European Federation of Public Housing (Housing Europe) will be represented by its president of the social committee and president of the Portuguese Committee on Public Housing, João Carvalhosa, partner of the Serra Henriques Foundation in ENHR, to whom we wish the greatest success in this representative mission.

This is the most relevant and decisive moment in the debate and definition of global policies on urban demography, housing, spatial planning, economy and the environment.

In view of the enormous problems and challenges facing the Member States, it is hoped that this important reflection will result in a New Urban Agenda for the 21st century. XXI, renewing the political commitment towards a truly cohesive and sustainable urban development.


XI Iberian Biennial of Cultural Heritage

The Serra Henriques Foundation represented, in this Iberian Biennial, the Association of European Cities and Regions for Culture (LikeCulture.EU).

The Serra Henriques Foundation, as a partner in the implementation of the National Policy on Architecture and Landscape, promoted a conference to disseminate this public policy.


Exhibition of Architectural Heritage Portuguese
Places in a latent state

The Serra Henriques Foundation is a partner entity in the organization of this exhibition and in the respective publication of contents under the curatorship of Maria Rita Pais and Luís Santiago Baptista.

The exhibition is based on a "journey to the invisible" because it addresses abandoned places of high heritage value that exist in the shadows, inaccessible or unapprehensible.

There are fifteen case studies in the national territory presented in the form of documents, drawings, canvases or original models, films and photographs by a hundred authors (architects, geographers, historians, artists, anthropologists, photographers and filmmakers).

The initiative has the support of the Ministry of Culture and will be presented to the public throughout the month of August 2017 at the Thalia Theatre in Lisbon, provided by the Ministry of Education


Archizines World Tour

Exhibition at the Serra Henriques Foundation

The Serra Henriques Foundation hosted the world's largest exhibition of independent architecture publications, curated by Elias Redstone and integrated into the programme of the Lisbon Architecture Triennale.

The Archizines exhibition, initiated in collaboration with the Architectural Association, is made up of a hundred architectural magazines, video interviews, fanzines and other publications from 22 countries.

Edited by architects, urban planners and academics, these publications offer new platforms for critiques, comments and research on the spaces we inhabit and the practice of architecture. It is an exhibition exhibition and an important reflection on the architectural discourse, highlighting the printed in the digital age.
