Cross Architectures

The Foundation devotes special attention to the enhancement of Cultural Heritage, the study of Sustainable Architecture and Spatial Planning. In this context and as an implementation partner of the National Policy for Architecture and Landscape (PNAP), it has developed a vast program that includes the National Prize for Architecture Education (archiprixportugal.org) and the Iberian Prize for New Traditional Architecture (rafaelmanzano.com).

Education for Architecture

The Serra Henriques Foundation has developed a set of initiatives to create a horizontal network of cooperation and exchange of experiences in the field of Education for Architecture. Projects guided by a bottom-up approach strategy and starting with the awareness of young people to the built environment.

With centralised exceptions, the quality of public space and the insertion of buildings in the urban environment and in the landscape are still overlooked by the majority of public authorities and the population.

Architecture is not yet a determining factor in the development of the territory and cities in Portugal, with repercussions in so many areas of people's lives. This was the starting point and motivation for the construction of this program as a connecting axis of the Architecture Platform.

Casa da Arquitectura

The Serra Henriques Foundation is an institutional partner of the annual Open House Porto event, organized by CASA DA ARQUITECTURA in collaboration with the Atlantic Front (municipalities of Porto, Gaia and Matosinhos), being one of the most expressive cultural achievements of that metropolitan area.

The two entities share the mission of increasing and supporting teaching, research and dissemination of knowledge in the field of Architecture and how it influences the life and well-being of populations.

The executive director of Casa da Arquitectura, Nuno Sampaio, is an inherent member of the Advisory Board of the National Architecture Award (Archiprix Portugal), established by the Serra Henriques Foundation in 2012. The exhibition and ceremony of the Archiprix and Rafael Manzano Awards were held at CASA DA ARQUITECTURA in May 2018.

CASA DA ARQUITECTURA, created in 2007, is the cultural entity that has been asserting itself in the universe of creation and programming of content for the dissemination and national and international affirmation of Architecture in society. Its action involves not only architects, but people and entities from various cultural and social areas who encourage and sponsor the mission in which they believe, in the public interest of Architecture. Its Board of Directors includes several entities such as the Municipalities of Matosinhos, Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia, the Order of Architects and the University of Porto.

Docomomo International

The Serra Henriques Foundation is an institutional partner of Docomomo - International Committee for the Documentation and Conservation of the Modern Movement.

The President of the International Committee, Ana Tostões, chairs the advisory board of the National Architecture Award - Archiprix Portugal - established by the Foundation in 2012.

The collaboration with Docomomo is a strategic axis of the Foundation for the dynamics of the Education Platform for Architecture, sharing the mission of increasing the teaching of architecture and the civic preservation of the built cultural heritage.

In these areas, the Serra Henriques Foundation promotes an editorial action, with which it intends to contribute to bringing reflection on Architecture closer to citizens.

This publication is appropriately part of the principles defined in the National Policy on Architecture and Landscape with regard to Education for Architecture and whose main objective is to contribute to the awareness of the role of architecture in the construction of the city and the way it conditions the lives of citizens. It aims to enhance greater literacy in this area, capable of generating a critical mass that demands more quality and consequently, promoting greater participation in the city's construction processes.

Acknowledging the importance of the Modern Movement in history and, in particular, in the history of architecture, the Serra Henriques Foundation joins Docomomo International for this edition, focusing on ten buildings, representative of the modern movement in Portuguese architecture and in Portugal, intending to draw attention to some references to the material expression of culture that, due to lack of knowledge, they can go unnoticed on a day-to-day basis.

It is a bilingual edition that aims to play a role in the dissemination and promotion of Portuguese architecture, in this case the modern movement, also at an international level.

This publication aims to be comprehensive and aimed at a general audience, familiar or not with these subjects and transversal in education and age.

To achieve this objective, it was decided to use illustration as a means of communication and a way to captivate the public. It is a book that seeks a new way of talking about architecture. With scientific guidance by Ana Tostões, illustrations by João Fazenda and coordination by Sofia Amaral Pereira, This is Modern Architecture for all!

Lisbon Architecture Triennial

The Lisbon Architecture Triennale is a strategic partner of the Serra Henriques Foundation in the dynamics of the Architecture Platform. The two entities share the mission of increasing and supporting teaching, research and dissemination of knowledge in the field of Architecture and how it influences the life and well-being of populations.

In this context, the Foundation has been supporting Open House Lisboa since 2014, in partnership with the Triennale and EGEAC/CML, being one of the most expressive cultural events in the city.

In collaboration with the Triennale, the Foundation supported the realization of the Official Portuguese Representation at the International Architecture Exhibition (Venice Biennale) - Homeland - News from Portugal - with content produced by a multidisciplinary team that brought together 90 professionals from the areas of architecture, economics, sociology, geography, history, anthropology, photography, law and design. The President of the Triennale, José Mateus, is an inherent member of the Advisory Board of the National Architecture Prize (Archiprix Portugal) established by the Foundation in 2012. Four editions of the Prize were held at the Triennale's headquarters (Sinel de Cordes Palace of the Lisbon City Council) - exhibition, Jury meetings and distinction ceremony.

Portuguese Association of Urban Planners

The Portuguese Association of Urban Planners is a strategic partner of the Serra Henriques Foundation in the study and reflection initiatives on Cities Policy and Spatial Planning.

The president of the organization, Luís Pedro Cerqueira, and his predecessor, Pedro Guimarães, are inherent members of the Advisory Board of the National Award for the Teaching of Architecture and Urbanism (archiprixportugal.org), established by the Foundation in 2012. Between the two entities, initiatives are carried out for the advancement of theoretical and practical knowledge of urbanism, which is indispensable for the creation of a responsible socio-territorial relationship.

The interactions between Urban Planning, and in particular the PDM, with the economy of the territory are increasingly determinant of the value of the land, as they interfere in the configuration of uses and uses, with manifest consequences in the development paradigms, in the forest, in the seafront, in the rates of desertification and depopulation. The topicality and scale of the theme call for the committed participation of municipalities, civil society, regional commissions, central administration, academics and experts.

In these areas, several strategic seminars were held in cooperation with the municipalities of Porto and Sintra and the Ibero-American Congress of Urbanism. Following these events, the "Carta de Sintra" and the book "Sociedade e Território" were published.

Order of Architects

Since 2012, the Portuguese Architects' Association has played an important role in the implementation process of the National Architecture Award - Archiprix Portugal - established by the Serra Henriques Foundation.

This is a huge shared ambition and a strong commitment to valuing national education and the excellence of young talents in Architecture.

In 2016, the Portuguese Architects Association was the Foundation's national partner in the process of implementing the New Traditional Architecture Award, in collaboration with the International Network of Traditional Architecture and Urbanism under the sphere of the Prince of Wales and with the High Patronage of the President of the Portuguese Republic.

The Order of Architects is, therefore, the first institutional partner of the Serra Henriques Foundation in achieving the quality and sustainability of the built environment in Portugal and in the strategic missions of the international context. Special emphasis on the involvement in the implementation of the National Policy on Architecture and Landscape, as well as in the European Forum for Architecture Policies.

Portuguese Association of Landscape Architects

The Portuguese Association of Landscape Architects is an important strategic axis for the realization of several initiatives participated by the Serra Henriques Foundation and linked to urban and territorial studies, namely within the scope of the Architecture Awards and in the implementation of the National Policy for Architecture and Landscape (PNAP).

The new Traditional Architecture

In the middle of the century. In the 21st century, the new traditional architecture can be the answer to the needs of our urban centers and the national territory, which faces serious challenges, especially in the sustainable use of resources in each region. It is a type of architecture that focuses on the use of raw materials, products and local labor, favoring the economy, the settlement of the young population and the conservation of the identity heritage, techniques and crafts of traditional construction.

Universities network

Within the scope of the Architecture Platform, the Foundation collaborates with all Portuguese faculties of Architecture, Urbanism and Landscape Architecture. This was fundamental to the excellence of the National Architecture Award (Archiprix Portugal) and is a strategic commitment of the Foundation in the involvement of the Academy in all initiatives within the scope of Territory and Heritage.

In the same way, and outside the national domain, the Foundation establishes points of academic cooperation with universities in Europe and the Archiprix International Network. Special mention should be made of the Publishing Support Programme, which includes the free distribution of books and publications by the most representative universities and research centres in the world.

Archiprix network

The Archiprix Portugal Prize, established by the Serra Henriques Foundation and the Archiprix Foundation, is part of the Archiprix network made up of similar initiatives from Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, Hungary, Croatia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Montenegro, Serbia, Bosnia, Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia, Russia, Turkey, India and Chile.

Also part of the Archiprix network is the global award - Archiprix International - worldwide referenced as one of the oldest and most prestigious academic distinctions in the areas of Architecture and Urbanism.

The Archiprix International Prize distinguishes the new generation of the best architects and urban planners, among the finalists of 380 universities in 87 countries.

Open House

The Serra Henriques Foundation is an institutional partner of the Open House Lisboa and Open House Porto events in collaboration, respectively, with the Lisbon Architecture Triennale and Casa da Arquitectura. These are two significant cultural achievements in Portugal.

The idea is simple: to open hundreds of spaces around the city for free - buildings of different eras and typologies - through programs of guided tours and the so-called neighborhood tours. In this way, the public has the opportunity to discover classics such as the Rectory of Lisbon, the National Library or cultural heritage that is usually fenced off such as the interior of the Águas Livres Aqueduct.
